Self pollination happens when pollen grains from a flowering plant fall in the pistils of same plant and therefore gametes from same individual unite to form the zygote. Cross pollination takes place when pollinators carry pollen grains from the plant to reach other individual plants of same species therefore gametes of dissimilar individuals form zygote. Since it encourages formation of the zygotes having genes from different individuals (new gene combinations) cross pollination contributes more to the biological diversity.
