WMV (or Windows Media Video) is a general name for video encoding solutions formed by Microsoft. The format is a division of the Windows Media framework which also includes formats like Windows Media Audio (or WMA), Advanced Systems Format (or ASF) and High Definition Photo (or HDP). WMV files employ the Microsoft container format and present Microsoft's own version of MPEG-4 (Part 2) video encoding technology.
