A data cube keeps data in a summarized description which assists in a quicker analysis of data. Whereas linked cubes employ the data cube and are stored on any other analysis server. Linking various data cubes decreases the possibility of sparse data.

Illustration: a data cube might store the Employee presentation. But so as to identify the hours that computed this presentation, one can make another cube through linking it to the root cube (or in this case employee performance).
