Metagenesis is the kind of life cycle in which there are two distinct forms of individuals of the similar species, one haploid and other diploid. In one of such phases gametogenesis takes place and fecundated gametes give birth to the zygote which then develops into other form. Metagenesis is also termed as alternation of generations or as diplobiont life cycle. (That is, all plants, for illustration, present metagenesis.)
