The MESI protocol is as well named as Illinois protocol because of its development at the University of Illinois on Urbana-Champaign and MESI is an extensively employed cache coherency and coherence protocol.

MESI is the most ordinary protocol that supports write back cache. Its employ in personal computers became widespread with the foreword of Intel's Pentium processor to ‘support the well-organized write back cache in addition to the write through cache previously employed through the Intel 486 processor’.
