Data registers – These types of registers can be assigned to a variety of functions through the programmer. They can be used with any of the machine instruction which performs several operations on the data.

Address registers – This register generally consists of the main memory addresses of the data and instructions or they may contain a portion of the address which is used in the calculation of complete addresses.
