In most vertebrate species, with the internal fecundation the females have the reproductive cycles with fertile periods. During this period, the female liberates pheromones (odoriferous substances which attract male of species) from skin and mucosae. The presence of the male individual and his pheromones also triggers the secretion of the pheromones by the female. (Several animals also use the pheromones for the territorial demarcation and for transmission of signal between individuals regarding the location of dangers and food.)
