Most of algae contain high nutritional value and are commercialized and consumed as human food, they are much popular food in the oriental world. Jelly compounds are extracted from certain algae, such as glues and pastes for commercial and industrial use. The agar-agar, employed as a medium for biological culture in medicines and in laboratories, and the substance termed as carrageenin, a constituent of tooth pastes, cosmetics, paint and hygienic products, are extracted from the rhodophyte algae. Diatom algae deposited on the bottom of sea form diatomites, employed in the production of filters, refractories, thermal isolation and cement. Various algae are employed as agricultural fertilizers.
