Explain the importance of delay period in the CI engine combustion phenomena?

If there is more delay period, more diesel fuel will be injected within the combustion chamber and there will be more pressure which leads to diesel knock.

But delay period is required in order to disperse and atomize the fuel in the air for the purpose of complete combustion. Hence, a prime and essential time should be given for the delay period depending upon the combustion characteristics of the engine.
