Chemical substances which compose the plasma membrane
Name the chemical substances which compose the plasma membrane?
Expert
The main components of the plasma membrane are proteins, phospholipids and carbohydrates. The phospholipids, amphipathic molecules, are often organized in the membrane according to their polarity: two layers of phospholipids make the lipid bilayer with the polar portion of the phospholipids pointing to the external of the layer and the non-polar phospholipid chains in the internal. The proteins can be found embedded in the lipid bilayer and there are as well certain carbohydrates bound to proteins and to phospholipids in the external face of the membrane.
