In central nervous system (CNS), the myelin sheath is formed by the apposition of the oligodendrocyte membranes. Every oligodendrocyte can cover the portions of axons of many different neurons. In peripheral nervous system (PNS), myelin sheath is generally formed through the successive Schwann cell membranes wrapping the segments of single axon. The Ranviers’ nodes emerge within the intercellular space between these cells. Myelin sheath is rich in the lipids but it also consists of the proteins.
