In insects, the circulatory system is open however this system doesn’t participate in the gas exchange procedure and in oxygen supply to tissues. Gases go in and out via the independent tracheal system which permits direct contact of cells with ambient air. Thus an insect can supply the huge oxygen demand of its fast-beating wing muscles even containing open circulatory system.
