Why do we add glacial acetic acid before adding naocl

When reducing a ketone to an alcohol in a lab, why do we have toadd sodium borohydride little by little under ice water? Also, whenoxidizing an alcohol to ketone, why do we add glacial acetic acidbefore adding NAOCL? What does the glacial acetic acid do? I don'tunderstand this. Please help. Thank you.
