The sun that leads to different rotational periods

For the Earth, we are used to thinking about only one period of rotation, i.e. one day. (If you could look through a telescope from outer space and measure the rotational periods of different cities like London, Miami and Melbourne, they would all be exactly the same.) What is it about the Sun that leads to different rotational periods near the equator and near the poles?
