Steps for fostering innovation

Assignment:

1. Which of the supertrends are driving H-P to change?

What is a supertrend? You'll need to know that before you can go any further. Maybe you noticed the term in Section 10.1, where they are listed. If you come across a new term while you're reading, you can highlight it. This is not one of the text's Key Terms, which are highlighted in yellow, and it is not in the glossary, so you'll need to pay attention when you read. Your instructor will look for one or more of the supertrends mentioned in your answer, so be sure you use the terminology in the text.

2. Which of the forces for change are causing H-P to undertake major organizational change? Explain.

Forces for Change is one of the section headings in your text. That's where you'll find them listed, both internal and external. There is more than one force affecting HP (see the plural verb "are"), and your instructor will be looking for them, so use the terminology used in your text.

3. How might Meg Whitman have used Lewin's and Kotter's models of change to increase the probability of achieving positive organizational change? Provide specific recommendations.

Again, look at the section headings to find these models. Scanning the section headings is a great way to review any book. Section 10.2 covers the Types and Models of Change, and in that section you'll find drawings and tables that illustrate the models you need to answer this question. Remember, this question asks you to give recommendations to Ms. Whitman, and to be specific.

4. To what extent is H-P following the four steps for fostering innovation? Explain.

Again, you'll notice a number: four. Look for a list of four steps in your text, and use the terms listed. Since they are steps, it is understood that there is an order to them. How far along is H-P? There is a drawing showing the flow from one step to another. Don't get confused with another list of four, Factors Encouraging Innovation. Keep reading.

5. What advice would you give Whitman based on what you learned? Be specific.

This answer requires that you do some thinking, and while it is based on what you learned, there will be opinion involved here. Just like in any group of managers, everyone has an opinion; educated opinions based on solid study. As a manager, the future of your company is riding on it, right?
