Social Scientific Approaches to Gender Violence Assignment
Answer the following applied questions in short essay format. Each question is worth a set amount of points. Be thorough and answer all parts of each question.
You may use course readings and notes from the entire semester, but be sure to cite sources as necessary.
1. What is social science? What does social science research involve, and why is social scientific research important?
2. Define gender violence and explain why it is such a challenging social problem. Why is preventing or ending gender violence so difficult?
3. Discuss the problem of gender violence from each of the three social science perspectives we used in this class. What does each social science discipline offer for analyzing the problem of gender violence? What future directions do you think each discipline should take for ending gender violence?
4. Define an interdisciplinary research approach. What are its advantages? How is it useful for analyzing and addressing large social issues like gender violence?
5. Instead of focusing only on the PROBLEM of gender violence, in this class we sought to analyze how to better ADDRESS and END gender violence. Thinking across the class as a whole, offer a proposal for how, as a culture or global community, we should move forward in ending gender violence. What do you think is most important and why? What role might social science research play in your proposal?
