During the Classical Era in Western music (ca. 1750-1800), public audiences began to supersede private patrons and the church as the major market for new music. How did genres such as chamber music (often written for a small number of amateur performers) and the symphony (performed for large public audiences) begin to provide composers with new degree of financial autonomy? At present, how does technology (and its relationship to musicians and audiences) possibly reflect similar trends?
