Modes of rectangular wave guides


Question 1: A rectangular waveguide has dimensions 2.5 X 5 cms. Find out the guide wavelength, phase constant β and phase velocity Vp at a wavelength of 4.5 cms for the dominant mode.

Question 2: Show that a TEM wave can’t propagate in a waveguide by making use of Maxwell’s equations.

Question 3: What are TEM, TE, TM and HE modes? Sketch the field patterns for dominant modes in rectangular waveguides.

Question 7: When the dominant mode is propagated in an air filled rectangular waveguide, the guide wavelength for a frequency of 9000 MHz is 4cm. Compute breadth of the guide?

Question 8: The dimensions of a guide are 2.5 X 1cms. The frequency is 8.6GHz. Find out the following:

a) Possible modes.
b) Cut-off frequencies.
c) Guide wavelength.

Question 9: The TE10 mode is propagated in a rectangular waveguide of dimensions a = 6cms and b = 4cms. By means of a traveling detector, the distance between a maximum and minimum is found to be 4.55 cms.

Question 10: A rectangular waveguide with dimension of 3 X 2 cms operates in the TM11 mode at 10GHz. Find out the characteristic wave impedance.
