Influence of solvent in reactions

The analysis of structure of water and the physical and chemical consequences of the structure provided an understanding of the solubility of polar and non-polar substances in water and the nature of acids and bases. Apply the insights gained from this analysis to chemistry in the solvent liquid ammonia. Ammonia, NH3, is a non-planar polar molecule which consists of three nitrogen-hydrogen single bonds and one lone pair of electrons.

1) Gasoline whose main constituents have the molecular formula C8H14 does not readily dissolve in liquid ammonia whereas antifreeze, HOCH2CH2OH, does. Describe.

2) Explain the structure of the molecular species formed when crystalline sodium bromide dissolves in liquid ammonia.

3) Nitric acid, HNO3, is a very strong acid and ionizes when it is dissolved in liquid ammonia. Write a balanced, net ionic equation for the ionization reaction in ammonia.

4) Give the name and formula of a compound which is a strong base in liquid ammonia. Describe why the compound is a base.

5) Would soap be efficient to dissolve greasy substances in liquid ammonia? Describe.
