ASSIGNMENT -

Send me an email to .................. . In the subject line, write "ENGL 101 Email Assignment."

In your email, please tell me five things I should know about you as a student, writer, and/or person. Use all of the guidelines below.

Some Guidelines -

1. Give the email a subject

In the subject line, write what the email is about in as few words as possible. Do not leave the subject line blank.

2. Use a greeting.

"Dear" is formal, and best to use when addressing a professor, authority figure, employer, etc., or someone you have never emailed before.

"Hello" or "Hi" are both fine with someone you know

Make sure to use the addressed person's name. This way, they know the email is actually for them.

Use the proper title for the person you're emailing. With your professors, generally it's best to call them Professor or Dr.

For me, you would address me as Professor Wallace.

3. Body of the email

If possible, use the first sentence of your email to let the reader know what your'e emailing about.

Make your email as clear and concise as you can.

Keep it polite. Pleases and thank yous go a long way, especially if you're asking for something.

Avoid using all capital letter (ex. I AM VERY HAPPY TO HEAR THAT). It makes it feel like you're angry or shouting.

Check for typos before you send, especially if you're using a smart phone.

4. Sign off

There are a number of ways you can do this. "Sincerely" is the most formal and polite, and "Best" or "Cheers" are also perfectly fine. If you're making a request in the email, "Thank you " or "Thanks" are good too. "Have a great day!" is nice and better for less formal occasions.

Sign your name. People may not know who you are by your email address, and shouldn't have to guess.
