Problem
One of the readings for this unit, The Marketization of the Nonprofit Sector: Civil Society at Risk?, raises what I think is ultimately the greatest concern about this trend when it states: "...growing partnerships between nonprofits and businesses may serve to keep nonprofit executives from addressing the underlying social issues that led to the creation of their organizations in the first place." Based on what we have discussed in class, your own experiences in the field, and what you have read... do you agree that this is the case, and if so, how have you seen that playing out in your own work? If not, share why you do not think this is a relevant concern. The same article also states that: "In most cases, nonprofits are not being funded to strengthen society but to provide social services." What do you think is the difference between strengthening society and providing social services, if any, and why is this important?
