Formulate the null hypothesis

The intensity of light re?ected by an object is measured. Suppose there are two types of possible objects, A and B. If the object is of type A, the measurement is normally distributed with mean 100 and standard deviation 25; if it is of type B, the 1measurement is normally distributed with mean 130 and standard deviation 20. A single measurement is taken and the value is X = 120.

(a) Let's formulate the null hypothesis as "the object is of type A". What is the p-value when X = 120?

(b) Interpret the p-value in part (a) in the context of this problem.

(c) Suppose a decision rule has been formulated that declares the object to be of type B if X > 125. What is the signi?cance level associated with this rule?
