Explain why does it make sense that nucleic acids

Given what you know of DNA, RNA, and proteins, why does it make sense that nucleic acids can serve as templates to make new polymers (i.e., new strands of nucleic acids and polypeptides) while proteins don't? what the polymerases do, in terms of code recognition, why it would be favorable to proteins?
