Checklist for Authors of Strategy Essays

1. Does the assignment have a strong grounding in concepts, theories and frameworks that are central to the module? [This isn't an invitation to use ALL of the concepts encountered on the module - you should be selective, using those that are useful to the task and the companies at hand.].

2. Does the assignment demonstrate a sophisticated and nuanced understanding and application of those theoretical ideas to the problem at hand? [We are expecting that you'll apply rather than regurgitate concepts and theory. You should demonstrate your critical faculty with theory and concepts not by substantial description of them (some description will clearly often be necessary) but through use of them to help you understand your issue, question or phenomenon].

3. Does the assignment demonstrate that the student has engaged more broadly than the readings on the course handout with relevant literature that helps them shed light on their problems or issues?

4. Is there a strong evidential foundation with clearly sourced data (of whatever type) that is being used to provide insights that help to address the elements of the assignment? Does the assignment show evidence of a critical appreciation of the quality and drawbacks of various data sources?

5. Does the assignment demonstrate a careful, precise, and cogent ability to make use of relevant evidence and data to support and evaluate arguments central to the focal issues or problems?

6. Is there a coherent attempt to arrive at some conclusions, implications and/or strategic prescriptions on the basis of the analysis conducted?

7. Do the conclusions, suggestions, and implications of the analysis in the report "make sense"? Are they plausible, sensible, do they flow from the logic of the underlying arguments, are they supported by evidence?

8. Does the assignment comply with norms of presentation, style, and regulations in terms of length, plagiarism etc.? Is it well written, polished and crafted, and not littered with typological errors?
