When looking at your facility's case mix index (CMI) it is noted that your facility is much lower than the national case mix index. The chief financial officer (CFO) would like a review of what is causing the low CMI and what steps need to be taken to drive up the CMI for your facility.

a) Consider the relationship between CMI and reimbursement.
b) Consider the relationship between types of patients and a CMI.
