1-Define cognition. Explain what Figure 1 means in regard to human cognition.
2-According to the textbook, describe the four steps in the problem-solving process.
3-Define reasoning, inductive reasoning, and deductive reasoning. What is the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning? Give examples of each concept.
4-Define and describe the six biases and heuristics in Figure 5. Give examples.
5-Describe, in your own words, the difference between reliability and validity.
6- Describe Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligence. In which of these intelligence areas do you show the strongest ability? In which intelligence area would you like to grow?
7-What are the four environmental interventions that affect childhood IQ?
8-What is creativity? What is mindfulness?

Chapter 8: Language
1-According to the textbook, what are the basic properties of language?
2-Describe how executive function plays a role in language.
3-What areas of the brain are involved in language? What environmental influences are important in the development of language?
4-Define coping, cognitive appraisal, and cognitive re-appraisal.
5-THOUGHT QUESTION: How can you use cognitive re-appraisal to increase your coping skills? How can you use cognitive re-appraisal to increase your school success?
Chapter 5: Consciousness
1-Explain what Figure 1 means in regard to consciousness.
2-What is daydreaming?
3-According to the textbook, why do we need sleep?
4-How can researchers tell what stage of sleep a person is in and whether or not he/she is dreaming? How REM and non-REM are sleep stages different? Review the stages of wakefulness and sleep.
5-What is the sleep disorder characterized by multiple wakings each night due to interruptions in breathing? Describe the other sleep disorders in the chapter.
6-Describe the three theories of dreaming (see pages 158-160).
7-What are the three types of psychoactive drugs? See Figure 13 for a good review. Summarize the information regarding stimulants.
8- Do some outside research, search for empirical articles on the impact of marijuana use. Find and describe one peer-reviewed empirical article in psychology about the impact of marijuana use. What are the long-term side effects of marijuana?
9- THOUGHT QUESTION: What do you think are some of the habits that contribute to the sleep deprivation of college students? Create a plan for a better sleep schedule and try it for several days. What did you do? Did it work? Did you have any dreams?
10- Imagine that you are in charge of doing a presentation for local Junior High School students about the dangers of drug use. Using this chapter and outside academic research, what are the three most important things that you would share with the students?(On this question please flash out your answer)
