Instructions: Ethical Evaluation

Your project is to take the recommended or actual decision from the topic of your first paper (Paper 1) and perform an Ethics Analysis on using Geuras and Garafalo's four step process, referencing the required textbook and my video lectures and slides. Finally, you need to determine whether the Ethics Analysis resulted in a change of recommendation.

I. Executive Summary: ONLY1 page. [NOTE: you must write this section last]

• State the problem in a concise statement, and the actual or recommended decision, including the decision maker(s)identified from the first paper in explicit language;

• First Paper included to these notes as a reference

• State the methods of analysis used in this paper;

• Very briefly summarize each step in this ethical analysis;

• State your final recommendation(s).

II. Body: [12 pages]

Part A. Basic Policy Analysis: [1 to 2 pages]

• State the problem and potential solution (this should take about two paragraphs);

• State the four criteria prioritized in order of importance:

o Feasibility, Political, Budget/Economic, and Administrative - about one sentence each.

State the actual or recommended solution, and why this meets the above criteria (abouta paragraph each).

o Finally, reference the first paper identifying who should be the decision makers(s) and whether this is compatible with the actual decision maker(s) noting the criteria used in the analysis (about a paragraph).

Part B. Ethical Analysis: [minimum 8 pages]

1. Ethical Evaluation/Analysis:

• Apply Geuras and Garofalo's 4 Step model to analyze the recommendation from Part I, using the following criteria (in any rational order):

A. Virtue/Character: [2 pages] explain, reference, and apply Aristotle's works to this problem by identifying the goal, extremes to avoid, and critical virtue(s), i.e. habits, that a person/organization must develop to reach this goal. Supplement by works by Machiavelli (leadership character) as needed.

B. Teleology/Consequences: [2 pages] explain, reference, and apply the Greatest Good rule from Bentham and Mill's works to explain these criteria;

C. Deontology/Principles: [2 pages] explain, reference, and apply Kant's Categorical Imperative and Formula for the End in Itself.

D. Intuitionism/Moral Sense: [1 page] state what it is about the solution that stirs your conscience.

2. Final Recommendation:[minimum 2 pages]

• Identify whether the recommended or actualsolution passed the ethical criteria, explaining why or why not. If not, would another solution pass the ethical criteria?

Part C. Conclusion: [2 pages]

• Recommendwhen this ethical analytic method should be used in problem solving on the job.
