Inflorescence:

The reproductive organs of the flowering plants are flowers. Flowers are generated after a period of vegetative growth. The flowers might be borne singly or in clusters. Flowers whenever borne singly are stated to be solitary, example: Hibiscus rosa sinensis (i.e., shoe flower), when in clusters they form an inflorescence.

Whenever several flowers occur in a cluster on a common axis, the structure is termed to as an inflorescence. The general axis is the inflorescence axis that is also termed as rachis or peduncle. Numerous single flowers are joined to the inflorescence axis. In situation of plants possessing underground rhizomes, the rachis or peduncle occurs directly from the rhizome. Such a rachis is termed to as scape.

Based on the position, the inflorescence might be categorization into 3 forms:

(i) Terminal Inflorescence
(ii) Intercalary Inflorescence and
(iii) Axillary Inflorescence.
