A cotter joint is used in order to connect the rigidly two co-axial rods or the bars that are subjected to the axial tensile or the compressive forces. Here, shaft is locked in place by the smaller pin that passes through the side of lug and partly or completely through the shaft itself. This locking pin is known as cotter.
