BASH stands for Bourne Again Shell. It was introduced by the Steve Bourne. It was the replacement to original Bourne Shell which is represented by /bin/sh. It combines all attributes from the original version of Bourne Shell, moreover additional functions to form it easier and more convenient for use. From then, it is adapted as the default shell for most of the systems running Linux.
