The endoplasmic reticulum is a fragile membranous structure contiguous to the nuclear membrane and existed in the cytoplasm. It makes an extensive net of channels all through the cell and is categorized into smooth or rough types.

The rough endoplasmic reticulum consists of a huge number of ribosome joined to the exterior side of its membrane. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum doesn’t contain ribosome joined to its membrane.

The major functions of the rough endoplasmic reticulum are synthesis and storage of proteins made up in the ribosome. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum plays a significant role in the lipid synthesis and, in muscle cells, it is important in the conduction of the contraction stimulus.
