The responsibilities of Transport layer are as described below:

a) Port addressing: The header in this should thus comprise an address termed as port address. This layer gets the whole message to the correct method on that computer.

b) Segmentation and reassembly: The message is sub-divided into segments and each segment is allocated a sequence number. Such numbers are arranged properly on the arrival side by this layer.

c) Flow and error control: Similar to the data link layer, however process to process occurs.
