In the crustaceans, characteristic aquatic beings, there are richly vascularized gills which create contact with water and allow gas exchange. In the terrestrial insects respiration is tracheal and gases flow in small tubes which connect animal external surface and ramify to tissues and cells devoid of participation of the blood. In the arachnids, besides tracheal respiration, book lungs (or thin folds resembling leaves in book) might also exist.
