In such beings there are a longitudinal muscular layer beneath the epidermis and, internally juxtaposed and perpendicular to it, the other circular (radial to the axis) muscular layer. The circular muscle layer comprises the function of elongating the body whereas the longitudinal shortens it. Through alternating actions both encourage movement.
