The normal pH of gastric juice is approximately 2. Therefore it is an acid pH. It is essential for the gastric pH to kept acid for the activation of pepsinogen (that is, a proenzyme secreted by the gastric chief cells) into the pepsin, the digestive enzyme which acts only below low pH. This pH level is achieved by the secretion of hydrochloric acid (or HCl) by parietal cells.
