a) High head power plant – When the water level exceeds the height of the 70m , the hydroelectric power plant is said to be high head power plant. The Pelt on wheel turbine is used as the prime mover.

b) Medium  head  power  plant – When the height of head water ranges between 15m to 70m, then the hydroelectric  power  plant  is   called as medium  head  power  plant. Francis turbine  is used as the prime mover.

c) Low  head  power  plant – When the height of the head of water is less than 15m, then the hydro  electric power plant is called as low head power plant.  Kaplan turbine   is used as the prime mover.
