Functionally the nervous system can be classified into somatic nervous system and visceral nervous system. The somatic nervous system comprises the central and peripheral structures which make voluntary control of efferences. The Central and peripheral structures which participate in the control of vegetative (or unconscious) functions of the body are comprised in the concept of visceral nervous system. The efferent part of the visceral nervous system is termed the autonomic nervous system.
