Membrane is any fragile sheet which separates one region from another blocking or permitting (or selectively or entirely) the passage of substances.
The skin, for instance, can be considered a membrane which separates the exterior from the interior of body; cellophane, employed in chemical laboratories to split solutions, acts as a membrane too.
