UNIX OS shell: A shell is an interactive user interface to operating system services which permits a user to enter commands as character strings or via a graphical user interface. The shell transforms them to system calls the OS or forks off a process to perform command. System call outcomes and other information from the OS are offered to the user via an interactive interface. Commonly employed shells are sh, csh, ks and so on.
