In protozoans, reproduction is asexual or sexual. The most common form of sexual reproduction is binary division or scissiparity, in which the cell splits it by mitosis originating two daughter cells. Various species, such as the plasmodium, agent of malaria, reproduce asexually by schizogony (that is, multiple fission); in this form of reproduction the cell becomes multinucleated, usually within a host cell, and each nucleus is expelled out altogether with cytoplasm portions giving rise to latest protozoans.

The sexual reproduction in protozoans can take place by conjugation, with incorporation of genetic material from one cell into other, or by gametes which fecundate others and form zygotes. In plasmodium sexual reproduction takes place in the mosquito, the definitive host, and the zygote undergoes mitosis (or sporogony) making many sporozoites.
