A retrovirus is a RNA virus that can be duplicated in a host cell employing the reverse transcriptase enzyme. It can generate DNA from its RNA genome. The generated DNA is then integrated in the host's genome through anintegrase enzyme. The RNA virus after that replicates as part of the host cell's DNA. Retroviruses are enclosed viruses which belong to the viral family ‘Retroviridae’.
Provirus is a virus genome that can assimilate into DNA of host cell. In inactive viral diseases the virus will not reproduce itself but throughout replication of its host cell. This state can last over numerous host cell generations.
