Therefore the cause of respiratory acidosis is the pulmonary respiration. In Metabolic acidosis, the blood pH is low not due to the pulmonary retention of carbon-dioxide however due to metabolic disturbances. Various metabolic disturbances outcome in liberation in the blood of non-volatile acids which discharge hydrogen ions lowering the blood pH (example: diabetic ketoacidosis).
