Difference between metabolic and respiratory acidosis
What is the basic difference between metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis?
Expert
In Respiratory acidosis, the blood pH is low due to raised retention of carbon-dioxide caused by the lowering of respiratory frequency or by pulmonary diseases which impair the gas exchange. Therefore the cause of respiratory acidosis is the pulmonary respiration. In Metabolic acidosis, the blood pH is low not due to the pulmonary retention of carbon-dioxide however due to metabolic disturbances. Various metabolic disturbances outcome in liberation in the blood of non-volatile acids which discharge hydrogen ions lowering the blood pH (example: diabetic ketoacidosis).
