Epithelial tissues, also named as epithelia, are tissues specialized in covering of external and internal surfaces of body.

The basic function of epithelium is to give impermeability and protection (selective permeability) to covered structure.

This justifies epithelium's typical aspects: the cellular juxtaposition forming layers of extremely proximate cells with diminished or none intercellular space among each two neighbor cells.
