Natural active immunization is that, in which a prior natural infection persuades the primary immune response, vague memory cells are generated and the individual becomes immune to new infections with antigen. This is what occurs in diseases which affect people just once in life, such as chickenpox and mumps.
Artificial active immunization is that, in which the main immune response is caused by the inoculation into an individual of specifically prepared antigens. It is the case with vaccines.
