Unless welding is performed with an extremely low current, a concave dip, termed as a crater occurs at the end of a weld-ment.

This crater results from the energy of the arc and the reduction of melted metal when it solidifies and cools. The size of each crater relates straightly to the welding current. Craters are not popular because they cause a welding defect because of slag wrapping.

Crater welding is one technique employed to fill craters. It needs regular welding current. There are control series that permit you to switch to crater filler current.
