Pumps are classified into:
a) Positive displacement pumps and b) Rotodynamic pumps.
In Positive Displacement Pumps the fluid is drawn or forced into a finite space and then sealed by mechanical means. The fluid is then forced out to a higher level. Example: Reciprocating pump In Rotodynamic Pumps there is a free passage between the inlet and outlet without any intermittent sealing. Example: Centrifugal pump
