It is an application program which executes on a firewall among two networks. An application gateway is employed for establishing connection among client program and destination service. The client negotiates with gateway to converse with the service of destination. Here, gateway can be termed as a proxy. Therefore, two connections are made. One between the client and proxy; other, between the proxy and destination service. Connections occur behind firewall.
