The neurohypophysis secretes oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone (or ADH). Oxytocin is secreted in women throughout delivery to raise the strength and frequency of uterine contractions and thus to assist the baby’s birth. Throughout the lactation period the infant’s sucking action on mother’s nipples stimulates the production of the oxytocin that then raises the secretion of milk by mammary glands. Vasopressin, or ADH, participates in the water regulation of body and thus in control of the blood pressure since it permits the resorption of free water through the renal tubules. As water goes back to circulation the blood volume raises.
