The vestibular system refers to the part of the ear that participates in the regulation and control of the equilibrium of the body (balance). The semicircular canals of inner or internal ear are perpendicularly placed and detect the alteration in gravitational position of the head. Whenever, the head rotates the pressure of the fluid within the canals on the cilia of the specific receptor cells contrast and these cells produce the action potentials transmitted through the vestibulocochlear nerve. Then, the neural impulse is interpreted by the brain as information regarding the gravitational position of the head.
