Expert
Locking is denying others the ability to update a record till someone completes the releases or update the record. Locking can happen on many different levels in a database. It can happen at the database, record, table, or field level. A lock can be shared (or another can read the record while an update is in progress) or exclusive (or no one can read the record while an update is in progress).
